Mahakali flood victims cry for relief

Gedi Sunar of Piparaiya, Kanchanpur, is homeless after the flood ed Mahakali river swept away her house and farmland on Monday night.

“We lost all crops, Rs 20,000 in cash and daughter’s gold jewellery in the disaster,” said the 50-year-old woman. She said her daughter’s house was also swept away by the flood . Gedi along with her four children are currently taking a shelter in one of the neighbours’ house. Her husband works in India.
Four other houses and six animal sheds were swept away by the river, while farmland has been swamped by flood waters. Another flood victim Puran Singh said they do not have any food to eat. Similar is the pain of Lal Bahadur Singh. “We had built a house at the cost of Rs 300,000, but it was swept away,” he said. Both Puran and Lal Bahadur returned from India on Wednesday.
Sarita Singh said she is finding it tough feeding herself and her three children after they were displaced by the river. “Children are crying for food.
I cannot feed them as my house was destroyed by the flood ,” she said. Her husband too works in India. Ishwor Singh is in the same boat. “The river eroded my 15 katthas of farmland. We are finding it hard to survive as we are yet to receive relief,” he said.
