Boys Union see off RCT to meet Army in semis

Boys Union Club continued their dream run in the Gurkha Cup, knocking out McDowell’s Ranipokhari Corner Team (RCT) 2-0 at Dashrath Stadium on Monday to book their place in the final four.

Boys Union who entered the competition as underdogs will take on Nepal Army Club in the first semi-final on Wednesday.

Kamal Shrestha scored an early goal to put Boys Union in the driving seat, while Ashim Jung Karki doubled the lead mid way through the first half which was enough to seal their victory.

Boys Union were recently promoted to the ‘A’ Division League and their coach Bijaya Maharjan admitted that the path ahead will be more tough. “We need to boost our confidence before we step against Army in the semi-finals. Regardless, we played a better game than any of our previous matches in this competition and I am content with the team’s performance.”

The spectators had to wait only five minutes into the game to witness the first goal. It all went down in a quick break as Karki fed Kiran Rai who lofted a cross goal wards from the right flank which RCT custodian Dilip Chhetri failed to clear and Shrestha headed home in an unguarded net.

Awestruck for having to trail early in the match, RCT gathered their momentum but they were forced even deeper in turmoil when Karki put his name on the score sheet in the 21st minute. Dribbling past defenders Karki found space to let loose a shot which gave Chhetri no chance.

RCT could have cut the deficit minutes before the break but Sulav Jung Rana’s attempt from the edge of the box deflected off his team mate Dipesh Thapa Magar and flew a few inches above the crossbar.

As the second half got underway RCT pressed onward to get back in the game but none of their efforts bore any fruit.

Meanwhile, Boys Union were first to create a threat at their opposite end after the break when Karki connected on Binod Lama Ghising’s corner kick from the right but his header was a few inches shy off the target. More woes for RCT came when Sekhar Limbu’s attempt bounced off the crossbar after taking a deflection off Boys Union’s Nke Jean Ruben.

RCT coach Madhu Karki was disappointed with the performance of his team. “The players lacked enthusiasm. The strikers were unable to pressurise and as it is we are already weak in defense.”
